The councillor highlighted that repeated flood incidents have severe physical, emotional, and financial consequences for affected residents. He described how quickly the situation escalated, stating that appliances and flooring sustained significant damage in just a few hours.
Residents expressed feelings of abandonment by local authorities, citing a lack of accountability for the recurring flooding issues. Councillor Kerr emphasized the need for a comprehensive response from statutory agencies to address these concerns effectively.
Recent research was conducted in the Kings Row area following persistent flooding complaints from residents. However, Kerr mentioned that assurances made regarding resolving flood issues have not materialized.
“There needs to be a sit-down with residents,” he urged, calling for transparency from local agencies about why such incidents keep happening. He believes that those living in Coalisland and other affected regions deserve better support and answers.
The severity of Storm Bert’s impact was felt across Northern Ireland, with parts recording more than half a month’s worth of rainfall within hours. In Dundonald, some residents found themselves trapped as floodwaters rose around their homes. The emergency payment scheme initiated by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons aims to assist those whose homes were damaged.
