In the early hours of Monday, tragedy struck near Vilnius Airport in Lithuania when a cargo plane crashed, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The incident involved a Boeing 737 operated by Swiftair for DHL, which went down close to residential areas during its final approach for landing.
Local authorities confirmed that all 12 individuals aboard the flight from Leipzig, Germany, were accounted for following the incident.
The aircraft departed Leipzig Airport shortly after 03:00 local time and crashed approximately an hour and a half later. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 indicates that the plane was nearing its destination when it encountered trouble.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the crash site. Firefighters worked to extinguish smoke emanating from a nearby building located 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) north of the airport runway. Fortunately, all residents of the affected property were safely evacuated.
Renatas Pozela, head of Lithuania’s firefighting and emergency services unit, reported that one member of the four-person crew lost their life in the accident. He noted that while a nearby house sustained minor damage, there was no evidence suggesting an explosion preceded the crash.
Lithuanian authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of this tragic event, although they currently have no information indicating foul play.
Despite the crash, operations at Vilnius Airport continued as authorities managed the situation. Weather conditions at the time included a temperature around 0°C (32°F) with cloudy skies and winds reaching 30 km/h (19 mph), which may have contributed to the aircraft’s difficulties during landing.
The Boeing 737-400 involved in this incident was reported to be 31 years old, raising questions regarding its operational status and safety protocols.
