Twin Sisters Shine at Masters Hockey World Cup
In a heartwarming display of athleticism and camaraderie, twin sisters Jean and Jan Satterley have reunited to represent Wales nearly half a century after they first donned their national team colors. Their recent achievement at the Masters Hockey World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, where they claimed a silver medal, is not just a personal triumph but a testament to the enduring spirit of women’s sports.
A Journey Through Time
Jean Satterley, now 66 years old, recalls the early days when she and Jan started playing hockey at the tender age of 12 in their hometown of Swansea. Their journey began in 1977 as schoolgirls representing Wales, and it has come full circle with their participation in the over-65s category at this year’s World Cup.
The tournament featured teams from 23 countries, showcasing a diverse array of talent. The Welsh squad achieved remarkable success, defeating formidable opponents such as Argentina, Scotland, the USA, and Australia before facing England in the final match. Although they lost 7-0, their silver medal win is cherished.
“It’s been really special to all play together all these years later,” Jean reflected on the experience.
The self-funded event took place from November 7 to 16, highlighting not only the competitive spirit but also the dedication required from players who often juggle part-time jobs alongside their sporting commitments.
Overcoming Challenges
This silver medal marks a significant milestone for Jean, who only recently received her cap for representing Wales after decades of wait. She pointed out the disparity in recognition between male and female athletes in Welsh sports.
“It’s hard to understand how in every sport in Wales, players—mainly men—get a cap for each game while I have only ever had one,” she noted.
Despite these challenges, Jean expressed gratitude for the support they received along the way. The team raised £4,000 through fundraisers to help cover travel expenses for their trip to New Zealand.
Looking ahead, Jean and Jan plan to participate in trials next year and are gearing up for home internationals set to take place in Swansea next May. Their journey serves as an inspiring reminder of resilience and passion in sports, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams.
