In South Wales, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has declared a major incident due to significant flooding. The River Taff overflowed in Pontypridd, leading residents to use buckets to clear water from their homes. Council leader Andrew Morgan reported that the Abercynon Feeder Pipe Footbridge was completely washed away, having just undergone repairs from damage during Storm Dennis in 2020.
While local authorities had prepared for Storm Bert, Morgan acknowledged that the sheer volume of rain made it challenging to mitigate the impact effectively. He emphasized ongoing discussions regarding support for those affected.
As authorities assess damage across the region, between 200 and 300 properties, both residential and commercial, have been impacted by flooding. In addition to the physical consequences, travel disruptions have also been reported due to fallen trees and flooded roads.
Despite the ongoing challenges, conditions are expected to improve as heavy rain begins to subside. National Resources Wales (NRW) has issued severe flood warnings for parts of the River Monnow in Monmouthshire, indicating a “significant risk to life.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his gratitude towards emergency services working tirelessly to protect communities while staying updated with developments from Ms. Morgan.
The First Minister noted that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of such weather events. She warned that it might become increasingly difficult to protect every home from future storms.
