Nila Ibrahimi, a 17-year-old Afghan refugee in Canada, is on a mission to illuminate the stories of Afghan girls, bridging cultural divides and fostering understanding among her peers. By creating a platform called HerStory, she aims to connect young people in Canada with the experiences of Afghan girls, emphasizing their shared interests—like a love for Taylor Swift—while highlighting the stark realities many face back home.
Nila emphasizes the importance of relatability: “I want to make them as real as possible so that others can put themselves in their shoes.”
Having fled Afghanistan three years ago due to the Taliban’s resurgence, Nila understands how distant the struggles of Afghan women can seem from Canadian soil. Under Taliban rule, restrictions have escalated; teenage girls are barred from education and women are prohibited from traveling without a male guardian. This environment has effectively silenced half the population.
Nila’s initiative, HerStory, serves as a vital conduit for sharing firsthand accounts from Afghan women and girls, both within the country and among diaspora communities. Through these narratives, she hopes to reveal commonalities that transcend geographical boundaries.
Acknowledging the disconnect between cultures, Nila notes, “The differences are vast, which makes it hard for them to feel connected.”
HerStory emerged in 2023 and aims to create a safe space for sharing experiences of living under Taliban rule. This initiative also breaks down misconceptions about educated Afghan girls by showcasing their resilience and capabilities.
Nila’s advocacy began in March 2021 when she participated in a protest against censorship that targeted young female singers. Despite facing serious challenges after fleeing with her family—a journey that took them through Pakistan before settling in Canada—she has transformed her experiences into powerful activism.
The recognition Nila received as the 20th winner of the International Children’s Peace Prize underscores her commitment to women’s rights and education. Marc Dullaert, founder of KidsRights Foundation, highlighted her inspirational efforts in giving voice to those often overlooked.
“Nila’s work provides them with a voice that will be heard across the world,” Dullaert stated.
As she navigates her own path, Nila encourages her generation to engage with social issues in ways that resonate with their identities. With HerStory, she hopes not only to remind the world of the plight of Afghan girls but also to inspire action among young people everywhere.
