Peaky Blinders Lookalike Contest Draws Fans in Birmingham
In a vibrant display of fandom, over 100 enthusiasts gathered in Birmingham city centre to celebrate the beloved character of Tommy Shelby from the hit series Peaky Blinders. The contest, held on Saturday outside the Bullring, showcased participants donning flat caps and waistcoats, each hoping to be crowned the best lookalike of Cillian Murphy’s iconic role. This event is part of a broader trend of celebrity doppelganger competitions that have captured public interest globally.
Contest Highlights
The atmosphere was electric as contestants took the stage, vying for recognition based on audience applause and judges' evaluations. Ultimately, 66-year-old Derek Brennan emerged victorious.
Brennan humorously reflected on his win, attributing it to both his looks and personality while playfully suggesting that age should not define his ability to portray Shelby. He mentioned that friends have long pointed out his resemblance to Murphy but often joked about being too old for such comparisons.
Among the participants was student Joe Freeman, who braved the rain dressed in a sharp suit after learning about the contest on Instagram. Freeman went so far as to get his hair cut just before the event.
He expressed his enthusiasm for Peaky Blinders, sharing that his American aunt often remarks on his likeness to Thomas Shelby, motivating him to go all out for the competition.
Another competitor, 22-year-old James Dunley, traveled from Telford with his father Arthur. Dunley noted how being surrounded by fellow fans amplified the excitement of the event.
As an Irishman, he felt a connection with Murphy and shared that others frequently remarked on their similar features. For him, participating was less about winning and more about connecting with other fans who share his passion for the show.
Looking Ahead
Peaky Blinders, which originally aired from 2013 to 2022, captivated audiences with its portrayal of a Birmingham crime gang in the post-World War One era. Fans can look forward to a new film set to premiere on Netflix, featuring Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby.
As this contest exemplifies, the enduring legacy of Peaky Blinders continues to inspire community gatherings and celebrations among its devoted fanbase. Whether through events like this or future film adaptations, Tommy Shelby’s impact remains as strong as ever.
