Severe Weather Hits the UK Ahead of Storm Bert
The United Kingdom is bracing for severe winter weather as heavy snowfall blanketed several regions on Thursday, leading to widespread disruptions. Forecasters have issued warnings for an impending storm this weekend, which is expected to exacerbate already challenging conditions.
Current Weather Warnings and School Closures
A yellow weather warning has been activated across much of northern and western Scotland, set to remain in effect until midday. In southwest England, another warning for snow will persist until 15:00 GMT.
More than 60 schools in the Highlands and 30 in north Wales have closed their doors, while around 100 educational institutions in Devon and Cornwall either closed entirely or adjusted their schedules due to the snow.
The upcoming storm, named Storm Bert by Ireland’s Met Éireann, is predicted to bring further chaos with not only heavy snowfall but also rain and strong winds, potentially gusting up to 70 mph (112.7 km/h) in some areas.
Safety Precautions for Travelers
With road conditions deteriorating, the Automobile Association (AA) has urged drivers to stay updated on weather forecasts and exercise extreme caution while traveling. Local police in Devon and Cornwall reported an uptick in collision incidents linked to the hazardous weather.
Train services have also been disrupted due to heavy snowfall, amplifying travel challenges for commuters. The AA anticipates a “major increase” in service demands as motorists seek assistance amid the adverse conditions.
Snowfall began early Thursday morning over Dartmoor and Exmoor; however, it intensified throughout the morning hours, affecting even lower elevations. Areas including the New Forest and South Downs experienced similar weather patterns.
Looking Ahead: A Cold Weekend
While southern England may see some relief as wintry conditions begin to clear, northern Scotland can expect ongoing snowfall into Friday morning. Wintry showers are also forecasted for north Wales and parts of northwest England later on Thursday night.
Temperatures plummeted dramatically on Wednesday night, reaching -10°C in Tyndrum, Scotland—the coldest night of autumn thus far—while Northern Ireland recorded a low of -3.9°C at Katesbridge. Additionally, widespread frost and icy conditions are anticipated overnight.
As winter settles in across the UK, residents are reminded of the potential for unpredictable weather patterns ahead. The Met Office continues to monitor developments closely and warns that more snow followed by rain could pose further disruptions in the coming days.
