Severe Weather Forces School Closures Across Northern Scotland
Severe Weather Disrupts Education in Northern Scotland Recent snowfall and plunging temperatures have led to widespread school closures in northern and northeastern Scotland.
The UK is grappling with significant snowfall as a storm approaches this weekend, disrupting daily life and prompting numerous school closures. A yellow weather warning for snow and icy conditions is currently active across much of northern and western Scotland, while parts of south-west England face similar alerts until the afternoon.
This winter’s first substantial snowfall has forced over 60 schools in the Highlands and 30 in north Wales to close their doors. Additionally, around 100 schools in Devon and Cornwall have either shut down, partially closed, or delayed opening due to adverse weather.
As the nation deals with the aftermath of heavy snow, attention turns to Storm Bert, the second named storm of the season. Forecasted to hit on Saturday, it is expected to bring further challenges with heavy snow, rain, and strong winds reaching gusts of up to 70 mph (112.7 km/h) in some regions.
The Automobile Association (AA) has advised motorists to monitor weather forecasts closely and exercise “extreme caution” while driving. Local authorities have reported an uptick in collisions attributed to poor conditions, urging drivers to plan their travels carefully.
The AA anticipates a “major increase” in roadside assistance requests as travel becomes more treacherous.
This week’s weather has seen a dramatic shift as rain transformed into steady snowfall over areas like Dartmoor and Exmoor. As snow continued to accumulate even at lower elevations, regions such as the New Forest and South Downs experienced similar conditions.
While southern England will see some respite from this wintry weather, northern Scotland can expect persistent snowfall into Friday morning. The colder temperatures have also been noteworthy; Tyndrum recorded lows of -10°C, marking one of the coldest nights of autumn for Scotland.
Additionally, icy conditions have prompted earlier warnings across various parts of the UK, affecting regions from Northern Ireland to Yorkshire.
On Wednesday alone, nearly 100 schools and nurseries were closed in Scotland due to frostiness, alongside significant disruptions experienced in Wales and England.
As winter settles in more firmly across Britain, the Met Office indicates that additional snow followed by rain is likely in the coming days. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as conditions may continue to evolve with Storm Bert on the horizon.
