Hollywood actor Luke Evans has opened up about the challenges he faced growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness while grappling with his sexuality. The acclaimed star of films such as Beauty and the Beast and The Hobbit revealed that he concealed his identity largely to shield his parents from the repercussions of his truth.
Evans acknowledged the harsh realities of his upbringing, recognizing that coming out would have led to his expulsion from the Jehovah’s Witness community, impacting not only him but also his family.
Raised as an only child in the valleys of South Wales, Evans maintained a close relationship with his parents, David and Yvonne. Despite this bond, he felt compelled to fit into a belief system he did not truly embrace.
He admitted that while he chose to adhere to the religion, he was uncertain about his belief in its teachings. Unable to leave home at a young age, Evans felt trapped and sought to make the best out of a difficult situation.
In his memoir, Boy from the Valleys: My Unexpected Journey, he shares painful memories of bullying during school due to both his faith and sexual orientation. He described himself as an easy target—quiet and isolated—which made enduring school life even more challenging.
Reflecting on these experiences, Evans noted that Jehovah’s Witnesses promote peace and non-violence, leaving him unprepared for the aggressive bullying he encountered in school.
His religious upbringing also limited his participation in school activities. For many years, he was prohibited from joining choirs or celebrating holidays, which further alienated him from peers.
At 16, Evans left Aberbargoed for Cardiff and pursued singing lessons—a pivotal step toward embracing his true self. It was at 19 that he finally came out to his parents, who remain devout Jehovah’s Witnesses today.
He emphasized gratitude for their ability to navigate their differing life paths with love and respect. Evans acknowledged that many former members of the faith struggle with familial relationships after coming out.
Despite losing numerous friendships over time, Evans found solace in his passion for performance. His journey led him to become one of the few openly gay actors portraying straight leading men in Hollywood—a testament to his resilience.
Looking back on his experiences, Evans expressed hope that sharing his story will inspire others facing similar struggles. “This is a story of hope… of overcoming obstacles,” he remarked.
As he prepares for an upcoming interview on BBC Radio Wales scheduled for November 13, Evans continues to stand as an advocate for authenticity and acceptance.
