CCTV footage has revealed shocking scenes of theft occurring at all hours. One clip shows an individual kicking in a plate-glass window to steal Harris Tweed bags worth up to £150 each. Local business owners report that thefts have become disturbingly frequent, with one shopkeeper estimating losses of £15,000 in just three months.
Galab Singh Gold, who manages numerous shops along the Royal Mile, expressed frustration over the situation. He noted that despite daily reports to law enforcement, little action has been taken. He remarked on the growing sophistication of the crimes, suggesting that organized gangs are responsible for the escalating thefts.
“This is no longer petty crime; this is organized theft,” Singh Gold stated.
Staff members have reported direct confrontations with thieves who exhibit aggressive behavior. In one instance, a staff member was punched while attempting to intervene. The fear among employees is palpable; some have even received threats indicating an awareness of their personal routines.
As shopkeepers voice their concerns about safety, they are also taking measures to protect their businesses. Singh Gold mentioned plans to hire security personnel at a significant cost of £8,000 per month due to ongoing threats.
Maria Sanchez, manager of Marchbrae on the Royal Mile, shared her own harrowing experiences with aggressive thieves. She explained that police responses often fall short of expectations; non-violent incidents may only warrant a phone statement rather than prompt action.
“The police say if it’s not dangerous, they’ll just take a statement over the phone,” Sanchez noted.
Police Scotland acknowledges the challenges posed by rising retail crime and has established dedicated teams to investigate these incidents. Chief Inspector Mark Hamilton assured the community that all reports are taken seriously and investigations are ongoing.
