In a significant response to escalating violence in Haiti, America’s aviation regulator has suspended flights operated by US carriers for a minimum of 30 days. On Monday, multiple flights from JetBlue, Spirit, and American Airlines were targeted while en route to Port-au-Prince. Though no passengers sustained serious injuries, a flight attendant on a Spirit Airlines flight suffered minor injuries due to gunfire. The following day, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) took precautionary measures by issuing a Notice to Air Missions (Notam), prohibiting flights within 10,000 feet of Haitian airspace.
The FAA cited ongoing security instability as a critical factor in its decision to suspend operations, emphasizing the need for heightened safety protocols.
In light of these incidents, the FBI has also joined the investigation into the attack on the Spirit plane. An official statement confirmed their involvement and noted collaboration with local law enforcement agencies. However, they refrained from providing additional details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Haiti has been grappling with severe gang violence since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. According to UN reports, more than 3,600 deaths have been attributed to gang-related violence this year alone, with over 500,000 individuals displaced from their homes. A statement emphasized that “the acute and immediate needs of the Haitian people mandate that the transitional government prioritize governance over competing personal interests.”
As Fils-Aimé begins to fill key governmental positions—including national security adviser and UN ambassador—the international community watches closely for signs of stability amid ongoing turmoil.
