A former police officer from Greater Manchester has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl while on duty. Dean Dempster, 35, pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including six counts of producing child abuse images. His case has raised serious concerns regarding trust and accountability within law enforcement.
The incidents occurred on December 29, 2023, when Dempster was one of three officers called to respond to a domestic disturbance in Oldham. While taking a statement from a young girl away from his colleagues, he sexually assaulted her. Following his arrest the next day, an investigation by the Greater Manchester Police’s professional standards directorate revealed further troubling evidence.
Authorities discovered thousands of indecent images of children on Dempster’s devices, including 104 images categorized as Category A, the most serious classification. In total, he amassed 440 Category B images and 2,472 Category C images between December 2021 and December 2023. Many of these images had been manipulated to superimpose Dempster’s face onto child abuse scenes.
During a search of his home, investigators found additional incriminating evidence such as four pairs of folded children’s underwear and two hard drives containing more illicit material.
Dempster was dismissed from his position at an accelerated misconduct hearing in May 2024. Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods expressed deep outrage over the case, emphasizing that Dempster betrayed the trust placed in him as an officer.
Woods stated that the bravery shown by the young victim is commendable and acknowledged the irreparable harm caused to her and her family. He characterized Dempster as “the very worst of society,” making it clear that he no longer deserves to wear a police uniform.
Chief Constable Stephen Watson echoed these sentiments during Dempster’s disciplinary hearing, describing the case as one of the most distressing he has ever encountered due to its egregious breach of trust.
As this case unfolds, it raises broader questions about oversight within police forces and how systems can be strengthened to prevent similar abuses of power in the future.
