A fire that erupted in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, has left a beloved children’s charity reeling, as it has lost everything in the blaze. The Magic Cottage, which provides vital support to children with additional needs and life-limiting illnesses, was at the heart of the incident that unfolded late Sunday night.
The fire prompted a swift response from emergency services, with over 100 firefighters dispatched to the scene on Frogmore Street. Their efforts led to the evacuation of approximately 12 residents from nearby homes as safety protocols were enacted. Lesley Reynolds, the charity’s director of operations, expressed gratitude towards the firefighters for their courageous efforts and effective emergency planning.
Despite their valiant efforts, Reynolds noted that the “old, iconic building could not be saved,” highlighting the significant loss felt by both the charity and the community.
The Magic Cottage had only recently taken over its premises, which had housed a family-run department store for nearly a century before its closure last year. Residents voiced their sorrow over losing a cherished local establishment that played an essential role in supporting vulnerable families.
In light of this disaster, Reynolds conveyed her thoughts to all those impacted by the fire, including building owner Alan Griffiths. She acknowledged the uncertainty that lies ahead for the charity but reassured supporters that they would strive to continue providing essential services to families in need.
“The next few months will be a time of uncertainty for us as a charity; however, we will do our very best to keep offering help and support,” Reynolds stated.
Firefighters utilized four water bowsers, two aerial ladder platforms, and a high-volume pump to combat the flames. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed significant structural damage, leading to collapses on both floors and the roof of the building. A thorough investigation is set to begin in collaboration with Gwent Police to determine the cause of this devastating fire.
As safety assessments continue in the area surrounding Frogmore Street, local authorities have maintained a large cordon due to ongoing concerns. The community is left grappling with this loss while rallying behind The Magic Cottage in hopes of rebuilding and moving forward.
