A bustling Sunday morning at an East London market turned tragic when a violent stabbing left one man dead and two others injured. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as a knife-wielding attacker approached unsuspecting shoppers, including a fruit vendor who witnessed the harrowing event unfold.
Adam Kadirzadah, a fruit seller at the East Street market in Walworth, recounted the shocking moment to BBC London. He noted that the market was particularly busy that morning.
He recalled, “The atmosphere was lively until suddenly a man appeared with a large knife, shouting. It was frightening; I couldn’t sleep afterward because of what I saw.”
During the attack, one man tragically lost his life while another man and a woman were rushed to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. A suspect, believed to be in his sixties, was apprehended at the scene.
As Mr. Kadirzadah described, customers were in the midst of their shopping when the attacker struck.
“People were buying fruit for their families. It all happened so quickly; two customers at my stall didn’t even realize what was happening until it was too late.”
He vividly recounted how one victim was stabbed from behind while picking up fruit. The ensuing panic prompted many shoppers to flee, while others attempted to apprehend the assailant.
“Once he left my stall, people chased after him until the police arrived,” he said. “We were fortunate that law enforcement responded swiftly; otherwise, it could have escalated further.”
Commander Peter Stevens of the Metropolitan Police expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and confirmed that officers are diligently investigating the incident.
“Our team is working hard to piece together what occurred that morning,” he stated, reassuring the public that there are no additional suspects being sought in connection with this violent act.
The aftermath left police tape surrounding the market area as investigators gathered evidence amidst scattered debris from the chaotic scene.
