The beloved Scottish comedian Janey Godley will be honored with a unique two-city funeral as part of her “final tour.” On November 29, a hearse will journey through Edinburgh, celebrating her connection to the city, before returning to Glasgow for the official ceremony on November 30. Godley, who passed away on November 2 at the age of 63 after battling terminal cancer, will be remembered at St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow’s west end.
Ashley Storrie, Godley’s daughter, announced the funeral arrangements via social media, emphasizing her mother’s desire to share her health journey and raise awareness about ovarian cancer. In her post, Storrie highlighted:
“For the past few years of Ma’s life, it was essential to her that she shared her journey with everyone. She aimed to support others facing similar challenges while addressing the symptoms of ovarian cancer in her own humorous and candid way.”
Godley rose to fame for her viral parodies of then-Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during the pandemic. After initially being declared cancer-free in 2022, she unfortunately revealed later scans indicated a return of the disease.
The hearse will navigate significant locations in Edinburgh, including a “pause for reflection” at St Giles’ Cathedral along the Royal Mile. It will then continue through Cockburn Street and Market Street before heading to Glasgow for the funeral service. Following this ceremony, a private cremation will take place.
In keeping with Godley’s vibrant spirit, attendees are encouraged to wear bright colors instead of traditional funeral attire. Her daughter requested that no flowers be sent; instead, contributions can be made to the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice or any charity of choice.
Godley was recognized with the inaugural Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. She spent her final moments peacefully at the hospice in Glasgow, surrounded by family and friends.
