The ongoing conflict in Gaza has drawn sharp criticism from the United Nations Human Rights Office, which reported a staggering proportion of civilian casualties. According to their analysis, nearly 70% of verified victims over a six-month period were women and children. This alarming statistic highlights the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
The UN agency’s recent report includes a chilling assessment of the situation, revealing that 8,119 individuals were killed in Gaza between November 2023 and April 2024. Among these victims, approximately 44% were children and 26% were women, with the most affected age group being children aged five to nine.
The report emphasized that the high death toll is largely attributed to Israel’s employment of weapons with wide-area effects in densely populated areas. However, it also acknowledged that some casualties may stem from misfired projectiles launched by Palestinian armed groups.
Furthermore, around 80% of fatalities occurred in residential buildings or similar structures. The UN’s analysis indicated a concerning trend of indifference towards civilian lives amidst the conflict.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk underscored that this unprecedented level of civilian casualties reflects a failure to adhere to international humanitarian law principles. He pointed out essential laws surrounding distinction between combatants and civilians, proportionality of attacks, and necessary precautions during military operations.
Türk urged for accountability regarding allegations of serious violations of international law, stressing that both sides have contributed to the humanitarian disaster. While Palestinian groups have launched attacks from densely populated areas, Israeli forces have been accused of destroying vital civilian infrastructure.
The situation remains dire, particularly in northern Gaza, where aid access has been severely restricted since early October 2023. The absence of food aid during critical weeks raised alarms and prompted U.S. officials to urge Israel to enhance humanitarian support or risk losing military assistance.
As conditions deteriorate further, aid organizations are witnessing harrowing consequences on the ground. Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, described his recent visit as witnessing “devastation” akin to post-war scenes.
