In a harrowing case that underscores the devastating impact of domestic violence, Leigh Pateman has pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend, Ellen Marshall. This plea comes nearly two years after he inflicted life-threatening injuries on her during a violent altercation in Skegness, Lincolnshire. The incident, which occurred on April 22, 2021, has since revealed the grim realities faced by victims of domestic abuse.
On that fateful day, Pateman, aged 45, poured petrol on Marshall while she sat in a chair at her home and subsequently ignited the flammable liquid during an argument. The resulting fire caused severe burns—80% of her body was affected, primarily the upper half. Despite undergoing extensive medical treatment and 12 hours of surgery, Marshall succumbed to her injuries on March 11, 2023.
Initially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, Pateman received a sentence of 17 years and 10 months in March 2022. However, following Marshall’s death, prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder. Pateman appeared via video link from HMP Garth for his recent court appearance at Lincoln Crown Court and is expected to be sentenced for the murder on December 2.
Judge Simon Hirst noted that life imprisonment is the only appropriate sentence for such a crime and emphasized the need to determine the minimum time before Pateman is eligible for parole.

During the investigation following the attack, police found Pateman hiding at his mother’s home covered in soot after he had fled the scene.
