A man dubbed the “best smuggler” has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for orchestrating illegal boat crossings of the English Channel, a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis surrounding human trafficking. Amanj Hasan Zada, a 34-year-old Iranian national residing in Preston, Lancashire, was found guilty of facilitating the illegal immigration of Kurdish migrants who had traversed Eastern Europe before reaching France.
Following a two-week trial at Preston Crown Court, evidence revealed Zada’s involvement in multiple crossings throughout 2023. Authorities linked him to three separate incidents involving migrants desperate to reach the UK.
Martin Clarke from the National Crime Agency (NCA) emphasized that Zada likely facilitated numerous additional crossings beyond those confirmed. He described Zada’s operations as a sophisticated enterprise, driven primarily by profit motives.
Clarke further noted that Zada displayed a blatant disregard for human life, often placing individuals in perilous situations while prioritizing financial gain. The NCA remains committed to dismantling networks like Zada’s, as they pose significant risks to vulnerable individuals.
The NCA is currently investigating approximately 70 cases linked to organized immigration crime and human trafficking. As part of their efforts, investigators monitored Zada’s communications with other smugglers, revealing discussions about migrant movements and successful crossings.
Zada, who also went by the name Amanj Zaman among those he smuggled, utilized social media to showcase his activities. Some videos depicted grateful migrants thanking him for his services, while others featured celebrations in Iraq where he was hailed as “the best smuggler.”
In May 2023, authorities arrested Zada and seized his phone, uncovering connections to various social media accounts that promoted his illegal activities.
Zada’s conviction highlights the urgent need for continued action against human trafficking and illegal immigration networks operating in Europe. As governments and agencies work collaboratively to combat these issues, the focus remains on protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.
