Violence Erupts in Amsterdam Amid Tensions Between Football Fans

A recent trip to Amsterdam turned violent for Israeli football fans, raising alarms about escalating tensions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The unrest followed a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax, as several fans reported being targeted in coordinated attacks.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Assault

Adi Reuben, a 24-year-old supporter of Maccabi Tel Aviv, recounted a harrowing experience when he was confronted by a group of over ten young men while walking to his hotel.

Reuben described how the assailants shouted derogatory phrases, referencing his Jewish identity and the Israeli Defense Forces. He attempted to flee but was violently kicked while on the ground. After the attack, he realized he had sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose.

Reuben opted against seeking immediate medical attention in Amsterdam due to fears that taxi drivers were also involved in the violence. Instead, he arranged for a flight back to Israel, where he planned to receive medical care.

Another Maccabi fan, Pnina, corroborated Reuben’s account, asserting that the violence appeared premeditated. She noted how supporters had to take refuge in hotels until it was deemed safe to venture outside.

Police Response and Community Concerns

Local authorities confirmed that Israeli fans experienced “serious abuses” during these hit-and-run style attacks carried out predominantly by youths on scooters.

Amsterdam police chief Peter Holla expressed his dismay at the situation, stating that despite heightened police presence in the city center, preventing such incidents proved challenging. Following the violence, police escorted Maccabi supporters to safety before transporting them out of the area.

The unrest was not entirely unexpected; prior incidents included clashes between Maccabi fans and local residents. Tensions escalated when some supporters vandalized property and burned symbols associated with Palestinian identity earlier in the week.

Mayor Femke Halsema condemned the violence as a manifestation of rising antisemitism and linked it directly to broader geopolitical tensions. She stressed that Maccabi fans were not perceived as instigators of violence against their Dutch counterparts.
