A Scottish man has embraced his dream job as a lighthouse keeper on the remote Gabo Island, located off the coast of Victoria, Australia. Sandy Duthie, 42, seized the opportunity after the previous keeper retired following 25 years of dedicated service. This unique role not only allows him to connect with nature but also positions him amidst a thriving colony of penguins.
Sandy’s journey began five years ago when he visited Australia with his partner, Brodie Gaudion. Initially arriving on a three-month holiday visa to meet her family, Sandy soon fell in love with the Australian landscape. His fascination with Gabo Island started two years ago when he spent two weeks conducting weed control work.
According to Sandy, Gabo Island immediately felt like home, reminiscent of his native Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The granite formations and scrubby foliage captured his heart, leading him to dream of becoming the island’s caretaker.
The lighthouse itself has stood for over 160 years, a historical landmark that bears witness to countless stories and lives. When Leo op den Brouw, the former keeper, decided to return to mainland life earlier this year, it opened a rare position for Sandy at Parks Victoria.
Sandy operates on a month-on, month-off rotation alongside another keeper who has been there for 16 years. His daily responsibilities include weather observations every six hours and various maintenance tasks essential for preserving the island’s infrastructure.
He describes the job as more of a lifestyle than mere employment. The unpredictability of island life requires adaptability and problem-solving skills as plans can quickly change due to weather conditions.
While Sandy enjoys solitude and finds fulfillment in his duties, he acknowledges the challenges of isolation. He humorously likens it to being on an island prison at times—a sentiment echoed by the previous caretaker who referred to it as “Alcatraz.”
Sandy’s tenure on Gabo Island also reveals intriguing Scottish connections that date back to its establishment in 1859. Historical documents suggest that Scottish stonemasons were enlisted for their expertise in working with local granite.
