Investigators have confirmed that both trains involved in the incident were in motion at the time of impact, contrary to earlier reports suggesting one was stationary. Details of the Incident

On October 21, 2023, David Tudor Evans, a 66-year-old resident of Capel Dewi, Ceredigion, lost his life when two trains collided near the village of Llanbrynmair in Powys. Initially, it was reported that a train traveling from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth struck a stationary train en route from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. However, recent updates from the Rail Accidents and Investigations Branch (RAIB) have clarified that both trains were indeed moving at the time of the crash.

The RAIB noted conflicting evidence regarding the speeds of the trains during the collision.

In total, four individuals sustained serious injuries, while an additional eleven required hospitalization for their injuries.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

The RAIB has released preliminary findings indicating that an automated system designed to enhance wheel-to-track grip failed prior to the accident. The analysis revealed that:

  • The 1J25 service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth was traveling between 15 mph (24 km/h) and 24 mph (39 km/h).

  • The 1S71 service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury was moving at approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) in the opposite direction.

The investigation is still ongoing as officials continue to assess various factors related to the collision speed and other potential causes.
