In a significant crackdown on organized crime, French authorities have sentenced eighteen members of a notorious people-smuggling gang linked to thousands of dangerous boat crossings in the English Channel. This group, predominantly composed of Iraqi Kurds, has been described by prosecutors as “merchants of death,” highlighting the grave risks posed to migrants attempting perilous journeys across the water.
The arrests were the result of a comprehensive Europe-wide operation conducted in 2022, which saw coordinated efforts from law enforcement agencies in Britain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Among those convicted, Mirkhan Rasoul stood out as the ringleader and received the harshest penalty during a court session in Lille.
Rasoul had previously faced smuggling charges and was already serving an eight-year sentence for attempted murder when he continued to orchestrate his criminal activities from prison.
The gang was alleged to have orchestrated roughly 10,000 crossings, making them one of the most active smuggling networks identified by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA). As part of the international operation, authorities confiscated over 100 boats, 1,000 life jackets, engines, and substantial amounts of cash.
The court heard disturbing details about the gang’s operations. They often overloaded small boats, placing up to 15 times more individuals on board than deemed safe.
NCA Deputy Director Craig Turner emphasized that the gang’s actions were driven solely by profit, disregarding the safety and well-being of migrants.
The complexity of this case required collaboration across multiple European countries and generated an astounding 67 tonnes of documentation for legal proceedings.
The case reflects ongoing challenges in managing illegal immigration and human trafficking across Europe. Following these convictions, French public prosecutor Carole Etienne announced that fines totaling €1.445 million (£1.2 million) were imposed by the court.
In light of these developments, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer has pledged to intensify efforts against such smuggling operations. The crackdown on this dangerous trade signals a broader commitment among European nations to enhance border security and protect vulnerable migrants from exploitation as they seek safer futures.
