# Valencia Floods: Search and Rescue Efforts Intensify

Spanish rescuers are directing their attention towards **underground garages** and a **multi-storey car park** in the aftermath of last week's devastating floods in **Valencia**. There are concerns that shoppers and workers may have been trapped inside the car park at a shopping mall in **Aldaia**, located on the outskirts of Valencia.

## Search Operations Underway

Authorities have confirmed that no victims were found in the **first 50 vehicles** inspected at the site. However, these vehicles were located near the entrance, leaving much of the submerged area unexplored. The situation remains critical as Spain's State Meteorological Agency (**AEMET**) has issued a **red alert** for parts of north-eastern Catalonia due to impending torrential rain, with **Barcelona** experiencing flooding early Monday morning.

> "The storm caught many victims in their vehicles on roads and underground spaces where rescue operations are particularly difficult."

Footage from Catalan media illustrated cars partially submerged on highways and floodwaters entering public transport, including a bus. Additionally, water has infiltrated sections of **El Prat airport**, leading to the cancellation, delay, or diversion of over **60 flights**, while rail services have also been suspended.

## Rising Casualties and Public Response

The death toll from last week's catastrophic rainfall now stands at **217**, including a British couple in their 70s whose family confirmed they were found deceased in their vehicle days after the floods. On Monday morning, Spain’s interior minister refrained from providing an estimate of those still missing.

Outside the Bonaire shopping mall in Aldaia, piles of rotting debris lined the roads as generators worked to pump out water; however, thousands of gallons remain trapped inside the mall's car park. The local police officer stated that teams would continue operations for as long as necessary.

Emotions are running high amid a perceived lack of timely warnings and support from authorities. Incidents escalated during a visit by Spain's King and Queen to **Paiporta**, one of the worst-hit areas, where they faced protests and thrown objects.

## Government Response and Community Solidarity

Local authorities in Valencia have extended travel restrictions for an additional two days to aid emergency services, while classes have been canceled and residents are encouraged to work from home. The Spanish defence minister announced an increase of **2,500 soldiers** joining the existing **5,000 troops** sent to assist with food distribution, cleanup efforts, and security against looting.

A warship carrying 104 marine infantry soldiers is also en route to Valencia’s port with supplies. Amidst this crisis, there has been a remarkable outpouring of solidarity as hundreds of volunteers take up buckets and brooms to help those affected by this calamity.
