Nottingham Forest’s Impressive Start: Are They the Next Leicester?
Chris Wood has netted 23 Premier League goals for Nottingham Forest since his arrival in the 2022-23 season, starting with a loan. This impressive tally surpasses Stan Collymore’s 22 goals for the club and is just one short of Bryan Roy’s record of 24.
Nottingham Forest currently sits third in the Premier League, marking their highest position since 1998. They have achieved this after winning three consecutive matches in the top flight, a feat not seen since 1999. Their opening ten games parallel the spectacular start of Leicester City’s 2015-16 season, where they shocked everyone by winning the Premier League at odds of 5,000-1.
Strong Defensive Line and Tactical Adjustments
Forest’s record of five wins, four draws, and one defeat mirrors Leicester’s past performance but with notable improvements. They boast three additional clean sheets compared to Leicester and have a goal difference that is seven goals better.
Wood has been pivotal, scoring eight goals in ten games this season. He contributes significantly to Forest’s success, accounting for more than half of their total 14 goals this season. His performances have alleviated concerns over a lack of depth in the striker position after attempts to recruit new players fell short.
“In the transfer window we were looking for many options that could help us,” stated manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Defensively, Forest has made strides as well. The addition of Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina has fortified their backline, helping them concede only seven goals so far—better than all except Liverpool.
Evolving Under New Management
Nuno Espirito Santo took over managerial duties last December and has gradually transformed the squad. Despite past skepticism regarding his appointment, he has demonstrated meticulous planning that enhances Forest’s prospects on the pitch.
Last season, Forest struggled defensively, conceding many goals from set-pieces. However, this year they lead the league with an expected goals against (XG) figure from set pieces of just 1.23—a dramatic improvement from last year’s struggles.
Despite facing tough challenges ahead against top teams like Arsenal and Manchester City, Nottingham Forest is showing signs of resilience and determination to maintain their remarkable form as they progress through this season.
