Drake vs. DeRozan: A Surprising Feud
Drake, the renowned rap artist, is no stranger to feuds with fellow rappers. However, his latest conflict with an unexpected figure—a basketball player—has caught many off guard.
Raptors' Courtside Fan
As a dedicated fan of the Toronto Raptors, Canada’s only NBA team, Drake is frequently seen courtside during games. He has developed friendships with many current and former players, including DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan made his return to the Raptors' Scotiabank Arena this past Saturday as a member of the Sacramento Kings.
Despite their friendship, Drake’s reception of DeRozan was less than warm. During this weekend’s game, the Raptors honored basketball legend Vince Carter by retiring his jersey—a customary tribute in the NBA for significant former players. Many speculated that DeRozan, a six-time NBA All-Star who played for the Raptors from 2009 to 2018, would receive similar recognition in the future.
Drake’s Bold Statement
However, when discussing the possibility of a DeRozan banner being raised, Drake made a striking comment on Canadian sports network TSN:
“If you ever put a DeRozan banner up, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.”
After the game, DeRozan responded to Drake’s remarks when asked by reporters:
“He’s going to have a long way to climb to take it down, so tell him good luck.”
Adding fuel to the fire, DeRozan appeared in Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which aimed directly at Drake and gained significant attention upon release earlier this year. He even joined Lamar on stage during a performance in Los Angeles over the summer.
Despite their differences, DeRozan maintained that he still considers Drake a friend and likened their feud to a legendary rivalry akin to Michael Jordan vs. Kobe Bryant. However, based on Drake’s comments, it seems he may not share the same sentiment.
In brighter news for Drake and Raptors fans, Toronto secured a thrilling victory against the Kings with a final score of 131-128.
