Arrests Made After Violent Attack in County Antrim
A man and a woman have been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following a violent incident that left a 74-year-old man seriously injured in County Antrim, according to police reports.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred on Station Road in Antrim town shortly after 19:30 GMT on Saturday. The elderly victim was approached by the suspects, during which the man punched him in the head, rendering him unconscious.
He was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment of serious head injuries, and he is currently in critical condition. The suspects, aged 21 years and 25 years, are still in police custody as investigations continue.
Local SDLP councillor Roisin Lynch expressed her shock over the incident, stating:
“This is a terrible thing to happen to anyone, but to attack a man of 74 years of age in the street and leave him in critical condition in hospital is particularly abhorrent.”
She extended her best wishes to the victim, hoping for his quick and full recovery, while acknowledging the trauma he has experienced. Lynch highlighted the community’s need for safety:
“People need to feel safe when walking our streets and there is much concern in the local community following this incident.”
Ongoing Investigations
In addition to this case, police in Londonderry are exploring potential links to another recent attack involving a woman over the weekend. Authorities are also investigating an arson attack in Belfast and a separate assault on a delivery driver in County Tyrone.
Three individuals remain in custody related to various offenses, including brothel keeping and controlling prostitution. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has urged anyone with information or dash-cam footage from the area to come forward.
