Sinn Féin Suspends Councillor JJ Magee

Sinn Féin has announced the suspension of Belfast City councillor JJ Magee from the party “without prejudice.” This action follows allegations of inappropriate online messages exchanged between him and a minor.

Removal of Party Whip

In a statement, Declan Kearney, the National Chairperson of Sinn Féin, confirmed that the party whip has also been removed from Magee. Kearney emphasized that the situation is being taken seriously:

“The chief executive of Belfast City Council has been notified, and we are following our children safeguarding policy.”

The party is cooperating fully with the investigation by forwarding the allegation to both social services and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Ongoing Investigations

Sinn Féin has stated that it will not provide further comments while the matter is “under active investigation by the appropriate authorities.” This decision underscores their commitment to addressing such serious allegations responsibly.

In a separate incident, police in Londonderry are investigating a possible link following a second attack on a woman over the weekend. Authorities report that a pensioner is currently in critical condition, receiving treatment for serious head injuries.

Meanwhile, there is growing interest in how Budget day will impact Northern Ireland. BBC News NI’s business and economics editor is examining what this day signifies for residents and businesses in the region.

This series of events reflects ongoing concerns about safety and accountability within local governance and community relations.
