Maia Sandu Secures Second Term in Moldova

Moldova’s pro-EU President Maia Sandu has successfully claimed a second term following a tense election run-off that presented voters with a choice between Europe and Russia.

Election Results and Voter Turnout

With most preliminary results counted, Sandu secured over 54% of the vote. In her late-night address, she expressed her commitment to being “president for all Moldovans.” Her opponent, Alexandr Stoianoglo, backed by the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, advocated for closer ties with Moscow.

During the electoral process, Sandu’s national security adviser alleged “massive interference” from Russia that could distort the election outcomes. Russia has denied these allegations, despite concerns raised by Moldova’s officials.

Voting concluded at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT), with a voter turnout of 54%, notably higher than in previous elections, particularly among expatriates abroad.

Key Moments and Reactions

As the results unfolded, Stoianoglo initially took an early lead with over 51% of votes within Moldova. However, Sandu dominated in Chisinau and among expatriate voters.

Upon overtaking Stoianoglo late on election night, celebrations erupted at her campaign headquarters with chants of “victory.” In her speech, she lauded her fellow citizens for their commitment to democracy, stating:

“In our choice for a dignified future, no-one lost… we need to stand united.”

Olga Rosca, Sandu’s foreign policy adviser, remarked on the importance of unity among Moldovans worldwide, stating they are “one family.”

Challenges Ahead

The final result is expected to be announced on Monday. As elections approach next year, Sandu has indicated a need for change by intensifying efforts against corruption and accelerating justice reforms.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Sandu on her win, emphasizing the strength required to navigate the challenges faced during this election:

“I’m glad to continue working with you towards a European future for Moldova and its people.”

Sandu’s victory is significant not just for Moldova but also for the broader geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe, as it reflects ongoing tensions between Western influences and Russian interests in the region.
