Janey Godley, the renowned Scottish comedian, has passed away at the age of 63. Following a battle with cancer that led her to cancel her tour titled ‘Why Is She Still Here?’ in September, she had been under palliative care. Godley first made headlines during the pandemic when her humorous voiceovers of Nicola Sturgeon’s COVID-19 briefings went viral. In November 2021, she announced her diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
Her manager, Chris David, confirmed that she died peacefully at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow, surrounded by family and friends. He expressed profound sorrow at her passing on November 2, emphasizing how much she would be missed by those who loved her and her fans. David highlighted Godley’s unique contributions to comedy, particularly her iconic voiceovers and her candid humor.
Initially diagnosed with ovarian cancer in late 2021, Godley received a clean bill of health in 2022. However, a subsequent scan revealed a recurrence of the illness. Born in Glasgow’s east end in 1961, Godley transitioned from being a pub landlady to making a name for herself on the comedy circuit. She was also the mother of Ashley Storrie, a comedian and actress known for her role in BBC Three’s Dinosaur.
In a heartfelt video shared on social media platform X, Storrie announced her mother’s passing around 7 AM and expressed gratitude to those who supported them during these challenging times. She emphasized that informing people directly was something her mother would have appreciated. Storrie thanked the hospice staff for their compassion during what was an incredibly difficult moment.
She also acknowledged Godley’s followers for their love and support throughout her illness, believing that this outpouring of affection contributed to keeping her mother strong for as long as possible. Storrie concluded the video with an emotional farewell to her mother while referencing Godley’s famous voiceovers.
Godley gained significant attention back in 2016 when she protested against Donald Trump during his visit to Scotland. Her comedic fame soared further as she continued creating voiceovers for Sturgeon’s COVID-19 briefings, eventually forming a friendship with the former First Minister. Beyond her viral fame, Godley regularly appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and hosted The C Bomb series on the same station. This year, she was recognized with the inaugural Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and received an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow shortly before her passing.
