Detectives looking into Russell Brand over claims of historical sexual offenses have submitted a file of evidence to prosecutors for potential charges. Since allegations involving rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse were brought to light in September 2023 by the Sunday Times, the Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches, Brand has been interviewed by police three times.
These incidents are reported to have taken place between 2006 and 2013, a period during which Brand was prominently featured in media roles, including positions at Channel 4 and BBC Radio 2. He has consistently denied the allegations, describing them as “very, very hurtful.”
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement indicating that following the initial investigation by Channel 4 and the Sunday Times, multiple women came forward with reports of sexual offenses. They confirmed that a man in his 40s had been interviewed under caution on three occasions as part of this investigation. The police also noted that they have now forwarded a comprehensive file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for review.
The CPS acknowledged receipt of this file from law enforcement and is now considering possible charges against the 49-year-old Brand concerning these historical allegations. The accusations stem from a period when Brand enjoyed significant fame, hosting national television shows and appearing in major Hollywood films. Additional claims from the investigation include assertions of Brand’s controlling and predatory behavior.
Previously, the BBC disclosed it had received five complaints regarding Brand’s conduct while he was on air as a radio host. Earlier this year, Channel 4 issued an apology for failing to address a complaint made against him in 2009. The production company Banijay UK also expressed regret for not adequately escalating concerns raised about Brand during his time hosting Big Brother spin-off programs.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who oversees the investigation team, stated that specialized support is being provided to the women who have come forward. He emphasized their dedication to investigating sexual offenses regardless of how long ago they may have occurred.
In an interview conducted online earlier this year, Brand expressed that being accused of such serious crimes was “very, very painful.”
