Ruben Amorim's Future at Manchester United Unveiled Soon
Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon, announced that there would be clarity regarding his potential move to Manchester United following Sporting’s match against Estrela on Friday.
Ruben Amorim, a former player with a deep connection to football, began his journey in the sport at Benfica, where he formed lasting friendships with players like Bruno Simao and Pedro Russiano. After being released from Benfica during his teenage years, Amorim struggled with the setback while Simao found a place at Belenenses. When Simao suggested that Amorim join him for a trial match, Amorim hesitated due to an injury—a broken arm. Nevertheless, Simao encouraged him to give it a try, promising that the coach would be accommodating.
Despite his injury, Amorim participated in the trial as a center-back. The coaches were aware of his condition and instructed other players to handle him with care. Ultimately, he impressed enough to secure a spot on the team, marking the beginning of his professional career. This determination has been a hallmark of Amorim’s life and is something he will bring to his new role as head coach of Manchester United.
Simao remains in touch with Amorim and expressed excitement about this opportunity for his friend, noting that it comes during a turbulent time for the club but still represents a prestigious position. Their friendship has endured since childhood; Simao even named Amorim as godfather to his daughter.
Amorim’s passion for football was evident from a young age. He was known for his competitive spirit and tactical understanding of the game, which helped him stand out among peers. His career took off at Belenenses after he worked through adversity following his injury.
In 2007, while playing for Belenenses in the Primeira Liga, Amorim reached the Portuguese Cup final against Sporting. Although they lost 1-0 after extra time, it was a significant moment in his career as he played an integral role in that match.
Amorim’s journey eventually brought him back to Benfica, where he achieved success over several years, winning multiple league titles and participating in international competitions. His coaching career took shape after he completed a postgraduate degree in coaching while playing at Benfica and secured an internship at Manchester United under José Mourinho.
After gaining experience at Casa Pia and Braga, he took charge at Sporting CP in March 2020 and led them to their first league title in nearly two decades. Now stepping into a challenging role at Manchester United, those familiar with him believe he possesses the skills necessary for success despite concerns about his relative lack of experience outside Portugal.
As Amorim embarks on this new chapter with United on November 11th, there is widespread hope among supporters that he can adapt quickly and bring about positive changes at Old Trafford.
