Ruben Amorim, shown in a childhood photo with friends Bruno Simao and Pedro Russiano, faced a significant challenge early in his football journey. After being released from Benfica, the club he had adored since childhood, Amorim struggled to find his footing in the sport. Simao, who joined Belenenses, encouraged Amorim to play in a trial match with him. Despite Amorim’s broken arm, Simao believed in his talent and arranged for him to be evaluated by the Belenenses coach. Amorim played as a center-back, carefully monitored due to his injury, and successfully impressed the coaches, marking the start of his professional career.

Resilience has been a defining characteristic of Amorim’s life. Now at 39 years old, he takes on the role of head coach at Manchester United, bringing that same determination with him. Simao remains supportive of his friend, emphasizing that this opportunity is significant for Amorim despite United’s current struggles. Their bond is strong; Simao’s daughter is Amorim’s goddaughter.

Amorim displayed immense passion for football from a young age at Benfica. He experienced heartbreak with his teammates after losses and was known for his aggressive playing style. His journey continued at Belenenses, where he earned respect and recognition despite earlier setbacks.

In 2007, Belenenses reached the Portuguese cup final against Sporting Lisbon, where Amorim played a pivotal role. Although they lost 1-0, he was recognized for his intelligence and understanding of the game—a quality that would later serve him well as a coach.

After more than 100 appearances for Belenenses, Benfica re-signed him in 2008. With them, he won multiple league titles and featured in European competitions alongside notable players like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Transitioning into coaching after ending his playing career, Amorim completed a postgraduate degree while also gaining valuable experience through an internship at Manchester United under José Mourinho. His early coaching days began at Casa Pia, where he led the team to promotion despite limited resources.

Amorim’s success continued at Braga and eventually at Sporting Lisbon, where he broke a long title drought for the club within just over a year of taking charge. His tactical acumen and ability to connect with players have positioned him well for this new chapter at Manchester United.

As he embarks on this new challenge with a contract running until June 2027, those close to him believe that his innovative approach could lead to remarkable achievements at Old Trafford.
