Can England Upset New Zealand and Change Rugby's Hierarchy
Steve Borthwick’s England has achieved victories over higher-ranked teams just twice, facing Argentina in their Rugby World Cup opener and Ireland during this year’s Six Nations.
Darcy Graham made a triumphant return to international rugby, scoring four tries as Scotland secured an impressive 57-17 victory against Fiji in their Autumn Nations Series opener at Murrayfield. After a year away due to injury, Graham’s performance saw him temporarily tie with Duhan van der Merwe for the title of Scotland’s all-time leading try-scorer, before Van der Merwe reclaimed the record with his own try in the second half. Ewan Ashman and Huw Jones also contributed to the scoreline, with Jones bagging two tries.
The match began with Scotland capitalizing on Fiji’s poor discipline, as Frank Lomani received a yellow card within three minutes for a deliberate knock-on. Although Scotland initially struggled to exploit their numerical advantage, Kyle Rowe eventually broke through Fiji’s defense. Adam Hastings added the conversion, establishing an early 7-0 lead. Fiji’s penalties quickly accumulated, with six conceded in the first twelve minutes and another yellow card issued to Apisalome Vota for slowing down play.
Graham took full advantage of the situation by scoring shortly after, and Hastings extended the lead to 14-0. Another quick penalty allowed Hastings to execute a cross-kick to Graham, who scored again despite a possible knock-on review. The match became increasingly challenging for Fiji when Vota’s yellow card led to Huw Jones intercepting a pass and scoring Scotland’s fourth try, pushing the score to 26-0.
Towards the end of the first half, Ashman received a yellow card for a no-arms tackle. Fiji capitalized on this opportunity as Armstrong-Ravula scored just before halftime. However, Scotland remained resilient and responded well after halftime despite conceding another quick try from Tevita Ikanivere.
Scotland’s attack was relentless; Graham completed his hat-trick after a brilliant team move that showcased excellent coordination among players. He then added a fourth try shortly after as substitutes Dylan Richardson and Jamie Dobie helped maintain pressure on Fiji’s defense.
The match concluded with Scotland scoring two more tries in quick succession, solidifying their dominance. Hastings' outstanding contributions included setting up Van der Merwe and assisting Jones for another score in the closing moments of the game. This notable victory marks an encouraging start to Scotland’s autumn campaign.
