At least eleven individuals have lost their lives following the collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in northern Serbia, according to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, who indicated that the death toll may increase. The incident occurred around noon local time in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, as people were seated on benches beneath the outdoor overhang, as reported by Radio Television of Serbia (RTS). Three individuals remain hospitalized, including two women who were rescued alive from beneath the debris several hours after the incident.

Approximately 80 rescuers from various parts of the country participated in the search and recovery efforts, utilizing heavy machinery to assist in their work. The railway station had undergone renovations in 2021 and was set for another update this year, with plans for an official reopening on July 5. According to Serbian media sources, Railway Infrastructure of Serbia stated that the canopy was not part of the reconstruction work.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević addressed the situation, asserting that those responsible for maintaining the canopy, which dates back to 1964, would be held accountable. He described Friday as one of the most challenging days in Novi Sad’s post-war history. “This is a significant and tragic event for both Novi Sad and all of Serbia,” he remarked, extending condolences to the victims' families and expressing gratitude to emergency responders.

In light of this tragedy, the government has proclaimed Saturday an official day of mourning. Rescue operations continue, with numerous workers searching through the rubble for any additional survivors. As this disaster unfolds, it highlights concerns about infrastructure safety and maintenance practices within the country. The incident has drawn attention not only to immediate rescue efforts but also to broader implications regarding accountability for public structures in Serbia.
