Eight individuals have lost their lives following the collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in northern Serbia, as reported by Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. The incident occurred around noon local time at the station in Novi Sad, the country’s second-largest city, when several people were seated on benches beneath the outdoor overhang.
Dacic confirmed that two individuals are currently hospitalized, one of whom underwent leg amputation due to injuries sustained during the collapse. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with responders maintaining communication with two individuals trapped under the debris, including a young girl.
Approximately 80 rescue personnel from various regions are participating in the operation, employing heavy machinery to assist in the search and recovery efforts. The station had undergone renovations in 2021 and was further updated this year ahead of its official reopening scheduled for July 5. However, Serbian media has reported that the Railway Infrastructure of Serbia, responsible for maintaining the canopy, did not include it in the recent renovations.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević stated that all individuals accountable for the canopy’s upkeep, which dates back to its construction in 1964, will be held responsible for this tragic event. He expressed that Friday marked one of the most challenging days in Novi Sad’s history since the war. Vučević extended his condolences to the victims' families and expressed gratitude towards first responders for their efforts during this crisis.
In light of these events, local authorities are expected to approve funding plans necessary for further projects related to infrastructure safety and maintenance. Meanwhile, train operators have announced adjustments to their schedules to minimize delays on services connecting Lincoln and Nottingham. Additionally, a special ghost train service is set to operate between London and a village known for its haunted reputation.
The entire nation is mourning this devastating loss while authorities work diligently to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents of this nature.
