A 21-year-old man has been convicted of murder after fatally stabbing a 36-year-old in Newport using a large knife. The incident occurred on May 14 in the Maindee area, where Lee Crewe was attacked. David Sisman, who had previously acknowledged involvement in the killing and admitted to selling drugs that night, maintained his innocence regarding the murder charge. However, a jury at Newport Crown Court reached a unanimous guilty verdict.

During the trial, prosecutor Mark Cotter KC described Mr. Crewe as an unarmed and intoxicated individual who was trying to back away when Sisman assaulted him. Cotter pointed out that Sisman chose to remain silent during police questioning, suggesting that if he had a legitimate reason for his actions, he would have shared his side of the story with authorities.

In defense of Sisman, Tom Crowther KC argued that the stabbing was an act of self-defense, portraying Mr. Crewe as an aggressive figure. He referenced a text message sent by Crewe shortly before the attack, which indicated intentions to rob Sisman, further noting that Crewe had consumed alcohol and cocaine that evening.

Crowther claimed that Sisman reacted instinctively during a moment of panic and stabbed Mr. Crewe out of fear for his safety. However, Cotter countered this narrative by acknowledging that while Mr. Crewe may have behaved inappropriately, being intoxicated and verbally confrontational did not equate to a physical threat against Sisman.

Following the stabbing, evidence revealed that Sisman fled the scene and disposed of the knife in the River Usk. Judge Daniel Williams postponed sentencing until November 28 to allow for a pre-sentence report, emphasizing to Sisman that life imprisonment was the only possible sentence for his crimes.

In an unrelated note, after a recent hospital stay, 88-year-old Miriam Souter has returned to Blackwater Mill care home. Additionally, Susan has created a Halloween display designed for individuals with disabilities, featuring allergen-free treats.
