Former Soldier Proclaims Patriotism Amid Serious Espionage Charges
A former British soldier, facing charges of espionage for Iran and escaping from prison, has proclaimed himself “a patriot” devoted to his country.
The remains of a former British soldier, who lost his life while fighting in Ukraine, will be transported to his family’s residence in County Fermanagh on Friday. Liam Love, aged 24, will be honored during a funeral service at St. Patrick’s Church in Derrygonnelly on Saturday. He served four years with the Royal Anglian Regiment and played a role in training Ukrainian recruits after Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. This experience deeply impacted him, prompting him to leave the British Army earlier this year to travel to Ukraine and join the fight.
Three weeks ago, his family received the devastating news of his death from a mortar attack in Lyman. Originally from Coventry, plans are underway for a memorial service at Coventry Cathedral in his honor. Friends have also initiated fundraising for a tree to be planted in his memory at the city’s War Memorial Park. Michael Love, Liam’s father, described his son as courageous and passionate, stating that his presence was always felt strongly by those around him.
Liam formed strong bonds with Ukrainian soldiers who came to the UK for training. Michael recalls how the training sessions were rushed, as these soldiers were needed back home quickly. Liam kept in touch with many of them after they returned to Ukraine, but tragically, several of them lost their lives. His father noted that Liam felt compelled to do more and was particularly moved by the struggles faced by the Ukrainian people.
Last Christmas, Liam informed his parents of his decision to leave the Army; however, they later learned he intended to head to Ukraine in May. Michael expressed pride in Liam’s decision but was acutely aware of the risks involved in such a conflict. They shared a heartfelt farewell before he set off.
Liam maintained regular communication with his parents and updated them on his experiences at the front lines. In September he suffered injuries from artillery shrapnel and discussions about returning home took place, though he remained focused on completing what he felt was his mission. Tragically, on October 9th, Michael received a call from a fellow soldier informing him of Liam’s death—a moment he had dreaded.
Over the past three weeks, the family has received condolences from individuals in Ukraine who knew Liam, providing comfort to Michael’s wife Lorraine during this difficult time. Hearing tributes about Liam’s bravery and professionalism has filled Michael with pride. He wishes for Liam’s legacy to reflect his steadfast belief in what he fought for and hopes that a quote he cherished—“What we do in life echoes in eternity”—will resonate as part of how he is remembered.
