The trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game has just been unveiled, bringing fans back to the perilous competition where protagonist Seong Gi-hun makes his return. Three years after emerging victorious from the brutal series of children’s games, Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, joins a fresh group of contestants and strives to guide them toward safety.
The inaugural season of this South Korean thriller depicted the harrowing struggle of 456 individuals who, burdened by financial woes, fought to the death for a substantial cash reward. It achieved remarkable success on Netflix, becoming the platform’s most-watched series upon its release, with 111 million viewers in the first month alone.
The new trailer sets an ominous tone as masked guards introduce a new ensemble of characters entering the deadly games. They are quickly thrust into their first challenge, a familiar one from the previous season: Red Light Green Light. Despite Gi-hun’s attempts to lead his fellow players to safety, events take a deadly twist. As in the first season, contestants have the option to vote on whether to continue or halt the game. While Gi-hun urges them to prioritize their escape from this dangerous situation, his warnings fall on deaf ears as they chant for “one more game,” enticed by the growing cash prize that fills a massive piggy bank suspended above them.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk emphasized that Gi-hun’s quest to uncover the identities and motivations of these new players is central to the narrative of season two. The enigmatic Front Man, who oversees the brutal competitions, is also back along with Hwang Jun-ho, the police detective who infiltrated the games last season while searching for his missing brother.
Hwang has previously acknowledged feeling significant pressure to elevate season two following its overwhelming success. Additionally, Netflix has confirmed that a third season is slated for release in 2025. Fans can look forward to the second installment of Squid Game premiering on December 26, 2024.
