Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon, announced that there would be clarity regarding his potential move to Manchester United following Sporting’s match against Estrela on Friday. He is anticipated to stay in his current role until the upcoming international break scheduled from November 11 to 19. The future of Amorim has become a topic of speculation since Erik ten Hag was dismissed from his position at United on Monday.
Amorim acknowledged the complexity of negotiations between clubs, stating, “It’s a negotiation between two clubs; it’s never easy.” Recent comments from United board member Sir Dave Brailsford suggested that an agreement was in place, as he informed fans that “it’s done” while attending an EFL Cup match against Leicester. This claim has been supported by various sources from Portugal. However, officials at Sporting maintain that no formal deal has been reached and discussions are ongoing.
The United management has opted not to provide any comments regarding the situation. Amorim indicated that clarity would emerge after the game against Estrela, emphasizing the need for discussions between the involved parties. He expressed hope for a resolution soon after their match.
Sporting will face significant challenges ahead, including a Champions League match against Manchester City and a league game against Braga on November 10. Under Amorim’s leadership since March 2020, Sporting has enjoyed success, winning all nine league matches this season and currently leading the table by three points over Benfica. Despite this success, Amorim admitted that uncertainty surrounding his future has affected team morale.
He noted that players have shown signs of anxiety due to ongoing speculation about his position. “I realized they were nervous and anxious about the news, especially with tough matches approaching,” he said. Amorim stressed that while he remains committed to his players, certain aspects are beyond his control.
As he concluded a recent press conference, Amorim was asked about his thoughts on the Premier League and responded enthusiastically with “everything.” Due to financial regulations affecting Sporting, an announcement will be necessary when an agreement is finalized regarding his departure.
Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped up as interim manager at Manchester United following Ten Hag’s exit. He mentioned being informed of his temporary role and expressed his readiness to lead the team moving forward. Van Nistelrooy also reflected on conversations with both Ten Hag and Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing their shared dedication to the club’s future.
United’s schedule includes upcoming matches against Chelsea and PAOK in the Europa League before they resume league play against Leicester. Following these fixtures, they will face Ipswich Town after the international break.
