A major fire has erupted at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, where nuclear submarines are constructed, according to police reports. Emergency services responded to the incident shortly after 00:44 GMT on Wednesday. Two individuals were hospitalized due to suspected smoke inhalation as a result of the blaze. Authorities have assured that there is “no nuclear risk” associated with the fire.
Residents in the vicinity are being urged to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed while emergency crews manage the situation. Additionally, access has been restricted at the nearby Michaelson Bridge as part of the safety measures in place.
The main building facility on site, known as Devonshire Dock Hall, has been evacuated, and all personnel have been accounted for. This hall spans approximately six acres and ranks as the second-largest indoor shipbuilding facility of its kind in Europe, according to information from BAE Systems. Among the submarines manufactured in this facility are the four Vanguard Class submarines, which form an integral part of the UK’s Trident nuclear deterrent program.
As firefighting efforts continue, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as needed. The safety of both workers at the shipyard and local residents remains a primary concern during this ongoing incident.
