A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody following the discovery of a “suspicious item” during an investigation related to a man’s death, prompting the evacuation of a tower block in West Dunbartonshire. Officers conducting a search at Overtoun Court in Clydebank found the item on Monday evening, leading to immediate action.
In response to the situation, Police Scotland deployed a bomb squad, which later performed a controlled explosion on the device. Residents, who were temporarily relocated to the Dalmuir community center or nearby hotels for the night, have since been permitted to return home.
Emergency services arrived at the tower block shortly after 1:00 PM on Monday, and nearby Dalmuir train station was closed, resulting in several train cancellations. ScotRail announced that the station has since reopened and services are now operating normally; however, they cautioned that some may still face delays or changes.
Law enforcement personnel remain present at the site, but sources indicate that the remaining safety cordon is expected to be lifted by Tuesday morning. The entrance to the building is now accessible, and some residents have already returned after their night in temporary housing.
Forensic teams have been active in the area since the unexplained death of a 58-year-old man on October 17. Residents of the 15-story building were instructed to evacuate swiftly after the suspicious item was identified and a perimeter was established.
The exact number of individuals evacuated remains unclear, but Police Scotland reported there was no evidence linking the item to the man’s death. The Dalmuir community center served as a temporary shelter for those affected, while others opted for hotel accommodations.
The precautionary measure to evacuate was taken following the discovery of the object. The property was deemed secure by around 2:30 AM. Chief Superintendent Gary I’Anson expressed gratitude to local residents for their cooperation and understanding as authorities managed this incident.
