The funeral of Alex Salmond, the former first minister, has taken place in Strichen Parish Church, close to his Aberdeenshire residence. The coffin, adorned with a saltire flag, arrived shortly before noon for the private service attended by family and close friends. Salmond passed away at the age of 69 due to a heart attack while attending a conference in North Macedonia just over two weeks ago. Following the service, a private burial will be held.

Eulogies were delivered by notable figures including acting Alba Party leader Kenny MacAskill, former SNP cabinet member Fergus Ewing, and Salmond’s niece Christina Hendry. While First Minister John Swinney submitted a motion of condolence to the Scottish Parliament, he opted not to attend the funeral. A spokesperson confirmed that the service was private in accordance with the family’s wishes, expressing that the thoughts of Swinney and the Scottish government are with Salmond’s loved ones during this time.

The Reverend Ian McEwan, a family friend who officiated Salmond’s father’s funeral in 2017, led the service. He described Salmond as someone who was vibrant and confident in public but also deeply caring for ordinary people. McEwan aimed to provide solace to Salmond’s family through what he referred to as a “dignified and fitting tribute” that would remain private.

The unexpected nature of Salmond’s death added complexity for his family. McEwan noted the profound sadness surrounding them and praised them as an inspiring presence even amidst such sorrow. Salmond’s body was brought back to Scotland via a private flight funded by businessman Sir Tom Hunter after he suffered a heart attack during lunch at the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy conference.

In a heartfelt statement, his wife Moira and siblings expressed their admiration for him as “a devoted and loving husband,” “a fiercely loyal brother,” “a proud and thoughtful uncle,” and “a faithful and trusted friend.” Members of the Scottish Parliament are set to honor Salmond on Wednesday during a debate regarding the motion of condolence submitted by Swinney. As discussions unfold about Labour’s budget proposals and calls for halting SNP universal benefits dominate headlines, tributes continue to pour in for the late politician.
