Wage Emergency and Strike of November 29th
Italy is facing a growing wage emergency, a theme that will be at the center of the general strike scheduled for November 29. According to Maurizio Landini, general secretary of the CGIL, the issue of wage increases and contract renewals is crucial for building a new economic and social model.
“There are almost 6 million workers in our country who do not exceed 11 thousand euros a year”, declared Landini, highlighting the importance of placing work and people at the center of union action.
Contract Renewal and Purchasing Power
Landini stressed the need to guarantee all workers renewed contracts that defend purchasing power. Regarding the 2022-2024 contract for public employees, not signed by the Cgil, he stated that the 6% increase proposed by the government is not sufficient compared to the current 17% inflation. This approach, according to Landini, represents a structural loss for wages.
- Need to increase purchasing power
- Insufficient public contracts compared to inflation
Simplification of Contracts
Another point raised by Landini concerns the proliferation of labor contracts. He argued for the urgency of simplifying and unifying such contracts, also proposing a law on representation in the world of work. The strike itself, he added, represents a mix-up for workers who will lose a day’s salary but is essential to claim real growth and reduce inequalities.
“Our goal is to build a different social and economic model”, said the secretary of the CGIL.
The Response to Criticism
In response to statements by Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini regarding a possible “wildcat strike,” Landini clarified that all necessary procedures had been respected for the strike to be called. He also confirmed the exclusion of the railway sector from the mobilization in order to respect the rules and guarantee certain services.
With rising social tensions over wages and working conditions, the future seems uncertain. However, the strike on November 29 could mark a turning point in the union struggle for fairer and more just rights in Italy.
