Peppe Provenzano, Foreign Affairs Officer of the Partito Democratico, welcomed Fitto’s nomination with reservations. In the Chamber of Deputies, he wished the new European Commissioner good luck, but warned that his party would not be politically open to a commission that supports nationalism.
Provenzano called for an “in-depth analysis” of Fitto’s statements, stressing that the triumphalistic statements of some members of the majority have already been denied. He then highlighted how Fitto contradicted the government’s political positions, proposing a commitment to the European interest in accordance with the treaties. Provenzano concluded his speech with the hope that Fitto will be able to carry out his new role more effectively than during his experience as minister.
On the other side of the hemicycle, the League expressed support for Fitto. Deputy Stefano Candiani stressed that the appointment of the commissioner represents a success for Italy, highlighting a clear distinction between the opposition and the national interest to be defended. However, members of the Italian Green delegation expressed strong criticism of the nomination. They noted that the shift from a centre-left to a centre-right coalition within the von der Leyen Commission hampers the values advocated by the Greens/EFA.
The Italian Greens have stated that the Italian presence in the Commission cannot be represented by a far-right figure. This choice is seen as a lack of respect for the European political context and raises questions about the compatibility between support for ECR and democratic values.
