2025 Fines Increases: Italian Motorists Prepare for a Surprise
Price increases expected for Italian motorists from 2025 A new increase in traffic fines could hit Italian motorists starting January 1, 2025.
With the increase in accidents caused by irresponsible driving behavior, the Italian government has introduced new measures to ensure road safety. These rules concern not only the use of mobile phones and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but also specific measures for scooters and bicycles. The goal is clear: to reduce the number of violations and improve the protection of citizens.
The new regulations provide for fines ranging from 250 to 1,000 euros for those caught using a smartphone while driving. In addition, an automatic suspension of the license has been introduced: one week if you have at least 10 points, otherwise 15 days. In the event of a repeat offense, the fines can reach up to 1,400 euros, with a suspension of up to three months and points deducted from the license.
The tightening of sanctions aims to discourage risky behaviors that often lead to serious accidents.
The rules regarding drunk driving have been severely amplified. If the blood alcohol level is between 0.5 and 0.8 grams per litre, the fines range from 573 to 2,170 euros, with a suspension of the license from 3 to 6 months. For higher levels, the consequences become even more serious, providing for arrest of up to six months and fines that can exceed 6,000 euros. Furthermore, for those who drive under the influence of drugs, a positive test result is enough to incur the revocation of the license with a suspension of three years.
The new rules are not limited to motorists. For cyclists, it is now mandatory to maintain a distance of one and a half meters when overtaking. For electric scooters, there is a requirement to have a license plate, helmet and insurance, in addition to the restriction of circulation only on urban roads where the speed limit does not exceed 50 km/h. Continuing with the reforms, a ban on driving high-performance cars (over 75 kW/t) is expected for new drivers in the first three years after obtaining the license.
These measures represent a significant step towards improving road safety in Italy. With the increase in penalties and the introduction of new rules, greater responsibility on the part of motorists and a reduction in road accidents is expected in the near future. The challenge now is to ensure that these regulations are respected and that road users are increasingly aware of the risks associated with irresponsible driving.
