An Extreme Case of Dental Care: Simone’s Story

Dental health can be a complex and sometimes dramatic issue. A recent case has highlighted the dangers of extreme dental treatments, such as the case of a 37-year-old man from Barletta, who has been hospitalized for eight months after an operation in Albania that resulted in the extraction of 20 teeth. This situation raises questions about the adequacy of dental care offered abroad.

Treatment and Complications

Simone, a web designer originally from Barletta, decided to undergo dental treatment in Tirana last March, attracted by the advertised favorable prices. However, his surgery turned into a nightmare: after the procedure he suffered four cardiac arrests and found himself first in intensive care in Albania and then transferred to various Italian hospitals. According to his brother, Simone now needs further surgery to address tracheal stenosis, probably caused by the long intubation. His brother describes the situation as “an endless Odyssey.”

Francesco Cairo, president of the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIDP), strongly criticizes the decision to extract so many teeth in a single session. According to him, this approach represents a medieval and inappropriate therapy.

A Wrong Approach to Periodontitis

Cairo emphasizes that periodontitis should not be treated with tooth extraction. On the contrary, there are effective methods to address this condition that include:

  • Patient education on proper oral hygiene
  • Treatment of gum and bone problems
  • Saving existing teeth with targeted interventions The expert warns that time is a crucial factor in healing: “The more time you give your body to recover, the greater the chances of healing from periodontitis.” This case highlights the risks associated with hasty and unprofessional dental practices that can lead to serious consequences for patients.

A Future to Reconsider

Simone’s case is emblematic of the need for greater awareness regarding dental care abroad. The pursuit of economic convenience should never sacrifice the quality of healthcare. It is essential to promote safe therapeutic practices and inform the public about the risks associated with quick and cheap treatments. Dental health deserves attention and adequate care, without compromise.
