Black Friday is approaching: what to expect

As Black Friday approaches, excitement is growing for the discounts and promotions that will characterize this week of intensive shopping. According to Codacons, the expected turnover in Italy is around 4 billion euros, a significant sum generated mainly by online purchases. In fact, it is estimated that over 65% of purchases will be made on digital platforms, for a total value of over 2.6 billion.

During this period of discounts it is essential to be aware of possible online fraud. Consumers are advised to follow some guidelines to make safe purchases.

This year, 47% of Italians have already planned to buy at least one product during Black Friday, an increase of 5% compared to 2022. If we also include those who are undecided or who will evaluate the offers until the last moment, the figure rises to a whopping 85%. This event also represents an opportunity to anticipate Christmas gifts; in fact, it is expected that one in two purchases will be for relatives or friends. The most popular product categories include:

  • Electronics and hi-tech: approximately 60% of consumers are interested.
  • Footwear: 42%.
  • Clothing: 39%.
  • Cosmetics and beauty: 32%.
  • Toys: 30%. According to the B2c eCommerce Observatory of the Milan Polytechnic and Netcomm, online spending in the days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday will exceed 2 billion euros, marking an increase of 9% compared to the previous year.

Security in online shopping

With the increase in online sales, the risks associated with fraud also increase. To avoid scams, Codacons and Udicon recommend:

  • Check the security of the sites (padlock indicator in the address bar).
  • Do not click on suspicious links or overly advantageous offers.
  • Always compare prices between different retailers. It is best to use secure payment methods such as PayPal or prepaid cards. It is also helpful to check the seller’s reputation and learn about their return policies.

A future perspective

Black Friday is not only an opportunity to score significant discounts, but it has become an indicator of evolving consumer trends. As e-commerce continues to expand, it is critical that consumers remain informed and prudent in navigating this increasingly complex retail landscape.
