Airstrike in Gaza: A devastating toll

A tragic Israeli air strike in northern Gaza at dawn has killed at least 66 people, mostly women and children, and left more than 100 injured, Al Jazeera and the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported. The military operation targeted an entire residential block near Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahia, with Wafa describing the event as a “horrific massacre”. Many residents remain missing, according to the Gaza Civil Defense. The tragedy was repeated in Gaza City, where another attack led to the death of 22 people in a building in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. Again, the raid reduced the targeted structure to rubble.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said most of the victims were sleeping at the time of the attack. He highlighted the high number of injuries and the difficulty in managing the health emergency, stressing that hospital staff are operating under-resourced.

Death toll and critical conditions

The aftermath of the attacks is severe. According to Abu Safia, the raid has destroyed at least five homes and hospital staff are busy recovering bodies and rescuing people trapped under the rubble. The situation is described as “very serious”, with health workers struggling to cope with the wave of incoming wounded. In parallel, the death toll has risen in Syria, where Israeli attacks against pro-Iranian groups in the city of Palmyra have left 68 people dead, including 42 pro-Iranian fighters and 26 foreigners, mostly Iraqis.

Rising tensions and arrests

Amid rising tensions, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. In addition, three Palestinians from Hebron were arrested for plotting the assassination of far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. These events highlight a spiral of violence that continues to escalate in the region. With a deepening humanitarian crisis and rising political tensions, the prospects for a peaceful resolution seem increasingly distant.
