Italy triumphs in the Billie Jean King Cup
Italy celebrated another triumph in tennis, reaching the final of the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga. Captain Tathiana Garbin described the success as a dream come true, stressing the importance of this result for the Italian women’s tennis movement.
A champion’s path
The Italians showed an extraordinary game during the final, defeating Slovakia with a clear 2-0. The victory was guaranteed by the successes of Lucia Bronzetti and the world number 4, Jasmine Paolini. This represents the fifth title for Italy in the history of the competition, with the last victory dating back to 2013.
The Italians had previously overcome Poland, thanks to a decisive performance in the doubles by Paolini and Sara Errani. The team entered the final as favorites and lived up to expectations.
Bronzetti opened the dance by beating Viktoria Hruncakova with a score of 6-2, 6-4. The player from Rimini, currently number 78 WTA, showed great determination and confirmed the trust placed in her by captain Garbin.
Paolini then closed the match against Rebecca Sramkova, number 43 WTA, dominating the match with a score of 6-2, 6-1 in just 65 minutes.
The victory sparked emotional celebrations among the Italian athletes. Paolini expressed her joy at having ended the year with another trophy: “Ending the year with this cup is incredible,” she said before the award ceremony.
Sara Errani, a veteran of the group, added that every moment spent with the team was special and meaningful. She thanked Garbin for involving her again in the winning team.
With this success, the Azzurre are now preparing to face the Davis Cup Finals, where they will have to defend the title they won last year. This triumph not only represents a great satisfaction for Italian women’s tennis, but also offers new prospects for the future of the national sports movement.
