Price increases expected for Italian motorists from 2025

A new increase in traffic fines could hit Italian motorists starting January 1, 2025. According to the Assoutenti association, without government intervention, fines will increase by 6% due to the inflation adjustment required by the Highway Code.

Adjustment of sanctions

The Highway Code, in Article 195, establishes that the amount of administrative pecuniary sanctions must be updated every two years. This update is based on the variation of the consumer price index for families of workers and employees, as detected by Istat. The 2023 budget law had suspended this adjustment until the end of 2024, in response to the energy emergency and the Covid-19 pandemic. With the expected adjustment, some fines will undergo significant changes:

  • Use of mobile phone while driving: from 165 to 175 euros (+10 euros)
  • No parking: from 42 to 45 euros (+3 euros)
  • Crossing with a red light: from 167 to 177 euros (+10 euros)
  • Exceeding the speed limit by 10 to 40 km/h: from 173 to 183 euros (+10 euros)
  • Exceeding the speed limit by 40 to 60 km/h: from 543 to 576 euros (+33 euros)
  • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h: from 845 to 896 euros (+51 euros)

Criticisms and alternative proposals

Assoutenti President Gabriele Melluso expressed concern about the increase in fines. He stressed that, while it is essential to prosecute violations that endanger public safety, the increase in fines does not guarantee greater road safety.

Melluso suggested that a two-year high school education program on road safety could provide more significant results than adjusting penalties. The appeal to the Meloni government is clear: stop the updating of fines and prevent further burdens for Italian motorists.

A look to the future

With the current approach to traffic fines and public safety, the debate on how to ensure safer roads continues. Authorities are called upon to explore innovative and preventive solutions that can improve safety without further burdening citizens. The challenge remains to find a balance between effective punishments and educational initiatives that can truly influence the behavior of drivers on Italian roads.
